Big Ben is back!… well, almost.

For the past five years – aside from a few occasions – the world’s most famous clock tower has remained silent, as Britain has seemingly crumbled around it without the comfort of its chimes.

But no longer. From 3pm today, Big Ben and the quarter bells will be striking intermittently, before both strike alongside each other at the usual rate of the clock. The tests will continue until 8am on Wednesday – so good luck getting any sleep if you are a local.

From 3pm on Wednesday, the bells will chime again at the usual strike rate.

For the first time in five years, the “Westminster Chimes” will ring out for a sustained period, and maybe, just maybe, things might start going back to normal.
