Tory leadership contest

Boris can deliver Brexit and beat Corbyn

BY John McTernan   /  18 June 2019

Struggling to understand the case for Boris? It’s pretty straightforward – never stand between an MP and their seat. After their historic defeat in the European elections – the worst Conservative party result in an election since 1832, which pretty well makes it their worst defeat ever – Tory MPs are looking for someone who could “save the furniture” .

Facing an onslaught from a populist, Tories looked around for their own insurgent. And spotted him – their only first name politician, Boris. Just test it out. Dom? Matt? Michael? The only one that rivals Boris is Rory – who is incidentally coming up fast on the inside rail.

If that was all that was going on, then it would merely be a matter of private grief.
