Boris Johnson quips about the closure of coal mines while on a visit to Scotland and the Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, and the Scottish First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, vent their disgust. Not just them – the Welsh First Minister, Mark Drakeford, as well as union leaders and other Opposition figures. Some Tories too.

Not for the first time the call goes up: Boris, Boris, what have you done? What he said, in the context of the UK switching to greener fuels, was this: “Thanks to Margaret Thatcher, who closed so many coal mines across the country, we had a big early start and we’re now moving rapidly away from coal altogether.”
