Boris Johnson has been accused of lying (again). This time it is regarding spending cuts to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Yesterday, during Prime Minister’s Questions, Tom Tugendhat, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, asked Johnson why the government is making these cuts, which he said is incompatible with the mantra of “Global Britain”. Boris claimed Tugendhat was spieling “fake news”.

Well, Paul Waugh of the i has uncovered an email to staff showing that the department are “planning on the basis of just under a 10 per cent reduction in our overall workforce size by March 2025”.

Immediately following the leak, Tugendhat asked the Speaker’s Office if a member of the Cabinet would make a statement on the matter. James Cleverly, Minister for the Middle East and North, told the House of Commons that the “internal work has taken place that has not been signed off by ministers” and that “ministers will make the final decisions on workforce changes in the spring”.

You have to wonder why Boris made the remark in the Chamber in the first place. If it was Downing Street hot shot Liz Truss who told Number 10 that false piece of information, then it must be her who must be placed under interrogation.
