The far-left’s scorn towards Sir Keir Starmer was on full display last night at The World Transformed (TWT) festival – a space for progressives within walking distance of the Labour conference. On the eve of Starmer’s first in-person address to delegates, the Socialist Campaign Group of MPs spoke at a rally of rowdy youngsters and loony reactionaries against Sir Keir, their comrade-in-chief.

Surprisingly, Jeremy Corbyn – the headline act – had little to say about his former shadow Brexit secretary. The rest certainly did. Rebecca Long-Bailey said Starmer does “not have the ideas”, Lloyd Russell-Moyle – who looked like he had come out of the set of Dad’s Army – said Starmer “was not a man for Labour”, and baby-faced Nadia Whittome claimed Blairites were trying to drive out radicals. Bell Ribeiro-Addy also read out a text from Andy McDonald, who quit the opposition on Monday. He believes the Labour leader should “seek another mandate” from the membership if he fails to honour his ten pledges that got him elected.

Heckles of “F**k Starmer” and “Starmer out” bellowed throughout the tented echo chamber. Whenever a speaker referred to the Labour leader, attendees would chant the words “Keith” in febrile opposition.
