Severe flooding in some of China’s agricultural heartlands is raising fears of food shortages and leading to growing pressure on the country’s president, Xi Jinping. Over the last few months flooding has been extensive in southern China and reports this week revealed that 443 rivers have overflowed their banks, with 33 swelling to the highest levels ever recorded, killing over 200 people and requiring the evacuation of another 3.8 million.
