The recent flooding in China makes one grimly aware of the fallibility of government in China. The flooding in Zhengzhou was particularly shocking – with footage of people stuck inside subway carriages with water up to their necks, or cars strewn along a road tunnel like discarded toys, partly because it was captured on social media and so felt deeply personal, but also because it reflects a new reality. For all our glistening urban towers and sense of control over the outside world, the power of nature can easily destroy us all.
