The votes are in and the British electorate has defied world leaders and doomsday predictions to vote for the United Kingdom to Leave the European Union.

The result in full:

Leave: 51.9% (17,410,742 VOTES)  | Remain: 48.1% (16,141,241 VOTES)
Turnout: 72%
