Final Result: How the UK voted to leave the EU

The votes are in and the British electorate has defied world leaders and doomsday predictions to vote for the United Kingdom to Leave the European Union.

The result in full:

Leave: 51.9% (17,410,742 VOTES) | Remain: 48.1% (16,141,241 VOTES)
Turnout: 72%

We now await the Prime Minister’s address to the nation from No 10 as he bids to calm nerves and explain what on earth happens next.
