“Today, we’d all love to be Brits”, screamed the headline of Germany’s mass-circulation Bild newspaper.  The tabloid, which is widely read by the so-called “man in the street” and sets the political agenda in Berlin, went on to compare the 3.4 million Covid jabs administered in Germany to the 17.7 million people who have received the vaccination in the UK. Noting Boris Johnson’s statement earlier in the week for the four-step plan to ease the lockdown and lift all legal limits on social contact by 21 June, Bild said the British now had a clear date for the end of this nightmare, while Germany has to live with Corona tristesse well into the autumn. “Where is our German 24/7, mass vaccination scheme?”, the paper asked, echoing a feeling of growing frustration in the German public.
