Leaving an event in Paris on Saturday evening I walked into, if you believe the reports, a warzone. Certainly it was not a normal day in the capital: the street was closed to traffic and filled with navy-clad officers of the Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité  (CRS), France’s police riot squad.
In fact, there was some lingering violence: dressed like Robocop, an officer chased down a young man down and threw him to the ground, sitting on him until another officer cuffed him and threw him into the back of a van.

Not a pleasant scene, but not yet a re-run of the French revolution.
