Just a month into a new government with a whopping majority and Grant Shapps, the Secretary for Transport, has announced the most extraordinary rescue package for FlyBe, one that smacks more of Corbynism than Conservative policy. For this is a government bailout for a failing business, an interventionist approach which most Conservatives believed had been buried – along with nationalisation, secondary picketing and the other detritus of the post-war years of economic muddle and decline – under Mrs Thatcher’s transformation of the UK economy.
