It’s official: the leader of the Free World is gaga. The extensive report by Robert Hur, the US Department of Justice’s special counsel investigating President Joe Biden’s illegal retention of government documents, was of the “There is good news, and there is bad news” genre. The good news was that Hur did not recommend prosecution of Biden; the bad news was that this was because, among other considerations, he did not consider him fit to stand trial.
Joe Biden, according to Hur, had inappropriately stored classified documents, but if he were to stand trial, a jury would find him to be a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory”. That finding was less damning, however, than the evidence on which it was based. Hur listed a relentless series of cognitive failings exhibited by Biden when giving evidence to prosecutors.
