The consoling old adage, much rehearsed by Scottish grannies, “There’s aye someone worse off than yerself” long ago attained the status of a truism in the culture of Caledonia. Lately, however, it has come into question, in the dire case of Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon (puir wee soul!), with commentators at a loss to identify the notional candidate for being worse off than the embattled First Minister.

Wee Krankie is having the political equivalent of a bad hair day – every day. Not so long ago, it was Christmas all year round for Sturgeon; now it seems more like a permanent Hogmanay hangover. The SNP is discovering that, although the metaphor most frequently used for politics is war, a more accurate parallel is with engineering. The SNP government is a Heath-Robinson contraption and everything is falling apart.
