Vanessa Vie’s Open Windows, Open Doors is the latest book from New Departures, the Notting Hill-based publisher famous for printing early major works by William Burroughs (Naked Lunch) and Samuel Beckett.Back in the 1970s Ladbroke Grove and its surrounds was the cradle of the counter-cultural movement in the UK. It was home to the International Times and supernumerary other zines, political organisations, dissident cafes fielding teams of scorers of “French blues”, “yellow dexys”, “black bombers” and assorted pharmacopoeia for the ravers affiliated with the movement. Michael Horovitz OBE, the head of New Departures, worked extensively with Allen Ginsberg and the Beat Generation of poets.
