Will Rachel Reeves go down in history as the worst Chancellor since the Second World War?
The CV embellishment scandal may be the least of her worries
It’s fair to say Rachel Reeves has not had a good week. After the disclosure that she has been economical with the truth about working as an economist for the Bank of Scotland – she actually worked in the retail complaints department at HBOS – the Chancellor was forced to update her LinkedIn profile, prompting the jokers on social media to create the most outrageous memes taking the mickey out of her boasting.
For her having embellished her CV, she’s been lampooned as Joan of Arc, the victor of Agincourt, a Spice Girls band member and Princess Leia of Star Wars to name a few of the great characters to which she was so mockingly compared.
Like the best satirical humour, the cartoons contained more than a grain of truth: the even bigger alleged embellishment was not how she described herself on her CV but the porkie she told the public that there would be no taxes on working people and that her Holy Grail was going for growth.
