I’m worried. I’m worried that Britain might boil over this summer. The hot weather isn’t helping but I’m mainly thinking of divisions over Covid, an increasingly incompetent government, social media hot-heads and another outbreak of ‘post-lockdown-fever’.

In the early stages of the pandemic, I was briefly hopeful that our country might put some of the Brexit trauma behind us and unite against the common foe. Silly me. Recriminations over the educational, mental health and economic consequences of the blunt, one-size-fits-all lockdown policy that Western governments have favoured look set to be dividing us for years to come.
