In my daughters’ wide circle of friends and friends of friends, I can think of only one who did not go to university. Now in their twenties, they are of that generation which saw higher education as unquestionably the best option for school leavers.
This had nothing to do with their academic prowess, as it would have done in my day; all, regardless of ability, were channelled through the accepted career route of a degree course.
How has that worked out? So far, not badly, with most in good jobs, none (except some trust fund babies) currently unemployed, and very few stuffing cushions.
