‘The Price of War: Understanding Conflict Economics in a Volatile World’

With conflict in the Middle East, Ukraine fighting for its freedom, the risk of confrontation with China rising, and a US presidential election in 2024, how are we to make sense of an increasingly volatile world?

Our experts will address all this and more on 2 November in central London.

Spaces have been reserved for Reaction subscribers, but move quickly. Tickets are free, including lunch.

The CERGE-EI Foundation has worked in Ukraine – supporting educators, students, and institutions – for the last 30 years and works to bridge the gap between academics, policy-makers, and the private sector.

The Price of War symposium provides policy-makers, private sector strategists, and senior figures from the non-profit sector with the insight they need to make informed strategic decisions in a complex and evolving economic landscape.

The economic impact of recent geopolitical shifts is enormous. The Russian Invasion of Ukraine has played out across the world, from the European energy market to African grain supply. It is vital to understand the implications of the economic theatres of this conflict.

But – as we look to the future – this war has shown China how the world will respond to an invasion of a sovereign nation. As the world’s second-largest economy, China permeates supply chains across industries. Understanding the threats China poses, potential outcomes, and their economic consequences is key to making informed strategic decisions.

What should we expect from China in the immediate future? How can those in Europe and the US avoid being caught in future economic crossfire? Cross-sector expert panels will address these questions and contextualise economic concerns within the evolving geopolitical climate with discussions including:

  • Conflict and Geopolitics: Understanding Tomorrow’s Risks
  • Crisis in the Middle East: impact of terrorism and the risks of escalation assessed
  • Proxy Wars: The Battle for Resources and Power in the Global South Investing and Doing Business in a Volatile World: The Impact of Conflicts
  • The Ukrainian Economy: Technology, Innovation, and Investment
  • US Election 2024: Internationalism vs. Isolationism and the Economic Implications

The event will also feature a contribution from General David Petraeus.

Spaces are limited so please respond speedily to secure your ticket. If you have any questions, please contact us at oliver@londondefenceconference.com.

CERGE-EI and CERGE-EI Foundation

The CERGE-EI Foundation supports market-based economic development, capacity building, and human capital development in post-socialist Eurasia through its innovative academic programs and support for the Prague-based CERGE-EI Institute. The Institute is a highly-ranked, internationally competitive Center of Excellence granting tuition-free postgraduate degrees in economics. The Foundation leverages the Institute’s expertise to provide training and opportunities to academics, policy-makers, and students throughout the region, reaching campuses from Kosovo to Uzbekistan. Together, the Foundation and the Institute have reached over 500,000 students who serve their countries and the region in leadership positions across sectors.

With a strong network in the region as well as in the US, CERGE-EI has a long tradition in researching economic issues relevant for both parts of the world. It now intends to establish a program focusing on Conflict Economics, which is dedicated to delivering scientific research and possible solutions to provide decision makers with evidence and indications of possible developments, consequences and adequate reactions. The Conflict Economics symposium will be the first part of this initiative.
