Politicians we would gladly have seen dragged through the streets on a hurdle while in office are later imbued with sagacity, humour and amiability.
Darling was treated appallingly by Brown’s supporters in August 2008 when he warned – quite rightly – of the economic storm ahead. But he was vindicated.
