The government is level-pegging with Labour for the first time since November, a new poll shows, as the Conservatives face a moment of acute danger over the cost-of-living crisis.

The latest voting intentions from Kantar Public shows the two parties on 36 per cent, with Labour down 3 points and the Tories up 2 points.

For context, Labour took a ten-point lead in some polls in January during the height of the Partygate scandal.

The caveat here, however, is that this is just one poll. YouGov’s recent findings show Labour increasing its lead three points this past week.

Nevertheless, the fact the Tories have managed to narrow the gap from their disaster showings several months ago show the party may be starting to recover in the run-up to May’s local elections.

But with Rishi Sunak’s spring statement receiving a frosty reception, and Conservative fears that Boris Johnson’s wartime boost is waning, it is going to take some effort from the Tories to convince voters to stay by their side this spring.
