Another week has passed, leaving only 88 days until the US election, and Donald Trump has still failed to land a finger on Kamala Harris whose lead in the polls is now creeping outside the range of the statistical tie. We’re still within the window when we might have expected to see a bounce given her sudden rise to the top of the Democrat ticket, but this bounce is beginning to defy gravity. Democrats also have their convention in two weeks. Traditionally, that would also be expected to give them another “bounce”. At some point, all these bounces could become unstoppable momentum.

Republicans now have an additional problem to work through and that’s how to demonise Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor, who Harris has picked as her running mate.
