What are Russia’s war aims in the Ukrainian conflict — or special military operation, or extended weekend manoeuvres, or whatever the current euphemism for mass criminality is in Kremlin circles? One of the many ways in which this crisis is unusual is the absence of declared war aims on the part of Russia. In one respect, that is inevitable: if the Russian dictator will not admit he is at war, he can hardly announce his war aims.
