With Angela Merkel poised to exit the stage after 16 years as Chancellor, there is one Mutti-watcher who is being sought out more than most to give his verdict on her years at the helm.

He is Robin Alexander, one of Germany’s best-known political columnists, who recently published a new book, Machtverfall,  on Merkel’s years in power which has sent shockwaves through the country’s establishment. The FT described the book – whose title translates as “Decline of Power” – as a scathing report card on Angela Merkel’s final term.
