Brits won’t necessarily vote the same way in the general election as they did in the locals. But the results still provide some big clues as to what’s coming.
The Tories remain in deep electoral trouble and will soon be the party of opposition.
There is one incontestable conclusion to be drawn from the multifarious results: they are a disaster for Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party.
But how much credit can Rishi Sunak take for the Tees Valley mayor’s win?
While the local council elections are significant, the stakes at mayoral elections are perhaps even higher.
When quizzed on how Labour would sort England’s council funding crisis, Starmer refused to pledge any extra funds.
But at least the PM has stuck to one pledge: losing 1000 council seats.
Despite Keir Starmer’s optimism, he is in the same place he was before – needing votes from Remainers and Leavers, university towns and post-industrial heartlands.
