Jaws dropped yesterday as protests against fuel prices in Kazakhstan escalated into violent demonstrations against the country’s authoritarian regime. As flames danced in the country’s largest city Almaty amid anarchy in the streets, it was clear that the ire of protestors is largely directed at Nursultan Nazarbayev, the former president and dictator who, despite stepping aside in 2019, has continued to hold sway as “Elbasy,” or “Leader of the Nation.”
