Moscow is seeking to secure military, diplomatic and economic pacts with West African leaders in exchange for strategic access to the Atlantic Ocean.
The reality is that France never let go of its colonial grip on the Sahel and that, not Russian intervention, is the reason for the region’s instability.
Taking action could be disastrous. Doing nothing threatens to turn the entire region into a series of Russian-backed dictatorships.
