When two nations are waging an all-out war that is taking an increasingly heavy toll of both parties and concerned countries from different parts of the world convene a meeting to attempt to find a path to peace, it is an unusual situation to invite only one of the belligerents to attend.

Yet, counter-intuitive though such a move may be, in the peculiar circumstances of the conference at Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, this weekend, aimed at exploring preliminary possibilities for crafting a peace process for the Ukraine war, it is not necessarily counter-productive.
